CARNELIAN: (also called "Cornelian") is a translucent, semiprecious variety of the silica mineral Chalcedony Quartz that owes its red to reddish brown color to its content of Hematite (iron oxide). It is a close relative of Sard, differing only in the shade of red. Carnelian is also referred to by other trade names like, Red Chalcedony and Red Agate. Although the term "Agate" usually refers to the banded varieties of this stone or one that has been color enhanced through heat treatments, while "Chalcedony" typically refers to a stone that has been dyed to achieve its red color.

Carnelian is the zodiac birthstone for Virgo (Aug. 22 to Sept. 22). Hindu astrologers assign it as a secondary stone for Aries (Mar. 21 to April 20) and Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22).  The Arabs associated it with the month of July. It is referred to as a "sun stone" and believed to represent the element of fire. Carnelian is also credited for being a stone of great spirituality. Many believe it to be a healing gem with a wondrous capacity for promoting mental and physical well-being.

BLACK AGATE is just one of a many varieties of Chalcedony Quartz. The names for Chalcedony and Agate are somewhat interchangeable, although the term "Agate" is usually used to describe the banded varieties of Chalcedony. This gemstone is specifically generated in eruptive rocks or in primeval lava zones and are found in the form of rounded nodules or geodes. When split or sliced, these show their banding to good, sometimes startling effect. In some geodes there is a central cavity, in other the center is hollow.

The Native Americans of the western American states referred to these agate nodules as "thunder eggs". Agate is the oldest stone in recorded history. Agates have been used in jewelry since biblical Babylonian times and were prized gems in antiquity. While all agates are said to be "protective stones",  Black Agate in particular is believed by some to relieve stress, give protection and increase courage.
